Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 슬〮ᄒᆞ〮야〮ᄒᆞ다〮 (Yale: súl-hóyá hòtá), equivalent to modern (sil-, to be hateful)+ (-eo, infinitive suffix) + 하다 (hada, to do).
