From Ottoman Turkish چوروك (çürük, rotten, spoilt),[1] from Ottoman Turkish چورومك (çürümek, to rot, to decay), from Proto-Turkic *čüri- (to sour, to spoil),[2] morphologically çürü- +‎ -k.

Cognate with Kazakh шірік (şırık), Turkmen çüýrük.
