Pulleyblank (1973) suggests that it is cognate with (OC *ɡreːn, “idle, unoccupied, relaxed, etc.”).

Sagart (2023b) relates it to (OC *[ɡ]ˤraʔ) "summer" and Burmese အား (a:, to be free (not in use; without obligations)).
