Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *r'eːwɢs, *r'eːwɢ) : semantic (water) + phonetic (OC *r'aːwɢ, *l'eːwɢ) – to wash with water.

Etymology

[edit]

Possibly Sino-Tibetan; compare Burmese လျှော် (hlyau, to wash (hair, clothes)) (Schuessler, 2007).

(zhào, “to wash clothes”) < *d-liaukh is exopassive derivative of (zhuó, “clean, brilliant, glossy; to moisten, to wash”) < *d-liauk; relates to (, “long-tailed pheasants or their plumage”) < *liâuk, owing to the birds' shiny feathers (ibid.).
