The suffix is a combination of the diminutive suffix -tje and an adjective/adverb-forming suffix -s.

  1. added to an adjective it creates an adverb (or rarely another adjective) with a connotation of familiarity and informality
    zacht → zachtjes (softly)
    dol → dolletjes (super, amazing)
    warm → warmpjes (comfortably warm)

Usage notes

  • The variants -jes and -pjes are used in cases where the regular diminutive would be -je or -pje instead of -tje.
  • The variants -kes and -kens are limited to Southern Dutch.
