Etymology

[edit]

There is a verb brucken (to brood), which is probably onomatopoeic for “clucking” (compare German Low Franconian Bruck (brooding hen)). Perhaps influenced also by bréien (to brood) (German brüten).

On the other hand, the word Brot (literally bread) is used for “spawn” in some German dialects and this regularly becomes Brukt, Brokt in some northern varieties of Luxembourgish.
