[edit]Ultimately from Latin lupus (“wolf”) but borrowed through Basque Lope~Lop, hence the preservation of intervocalic /p/. The final /e/ may derive from the Latin vocative ending -e.[1] Compare the doublet lobo (“wolf”), which Spanish directly inherited from Latin.
