From Proto-Indo-European *dʰémbʰ-e-ti, from *dʰembʰ- (to fog),[1] which appears to be a *bʰ-extension of *dʰemH- (to smoke, blow); see Sanskrit धम् (dham, to blow into) for more potential cognates.
