Etymology of Limburgish iich

[edit]

Hey @Djkcel, a few days ago you added to the etymology of Limburgish iich. These additions are terms from which iich is supposedly inherited from an unshifted form from Middle Dutch, namely icke (which is already not the standard form in Middle Dutch but one nearly exclusively used in rhyme). I find this a highly suspect etymology as forms that took part in the high German consonant shift were already attested in the w:Wachtendonck Psalms. I therefore don't think we should be adding Middle/Old Dutch forms to the etymology that aren't known to be ancestor terms to this Limburgish term. Unless of course you based this on evidence that the modern Limburgish form only underwent the consonant shift far later (post Middle Dutch period), in which case I do think it would be a good idea to add that this is not the scholarly consensus at this point (as far as I'm aware at least). Sup BartGerardsSodermans! I think you're right, the Limburgish aligns more with High German forms than the Middle Dutch. At the very most Middle Dutch would be an influence and not an ancestor in this case, so I've gone ahead and taken out the intermediary forms. Thanks for the explanation!
