[edit]From Middle Irish garrda,[3] from Old Norse garðr (“enclosed space, yard”),[4] from Proto-Germanic *gardaz (“court, yard, enclosure”), from *ǵʰortós (“enclosure”), from *ǵʰer- (“to enclose”). Doublet of gort.
