[edit]From colloquial Old Church Slavonic *харьнъ (*xarĭnŭ) equivalent to Macedonian арен (aren) and Bulgarian ха́рен (háren, “good, likeable”) from Ancient Greek χάρις (kháris, “goodwill”) + Proto-Slavic *-ьnъ + -ic.
