Inherited from Old Spanish xaguarço, apparently borrowed from a Mozarabic *šaguarço, variant (with double-metathesis) of *šaugaçro, from Latin salicastrum. Doublet of sargazo (borrowed via Portuguese) and possibly of arcazón as well.
