Fashions 1850-1869

The Crinoline Period - named for the caged crinoline that held out women's skirts. Civil war divided the country, sewing machines proved a boon to manufacturing military uniforms. House of Worth opened in 1858; first official "couturier" by today's standards. Blue denim trousers known as Levi's were durable pants for the men of the California gold rush. Invention of photography now documents our everyday and formal styles.
