Much of Jean-Michel Basquiat's art seems like that of one's inner child. Thus a "sweet" name like "Pez Dispenser" evokes child hood nostalgia. Note his signature crown dawned upon what looks like a T - Rex, the king of Dinosaurs.

The painting has been held in private collection since 1990, when it was acquired from Stéphane Janssen, the son of a wealthy Belgian industrialist and a tireless advocate for the CoBrA movement, who bought it from Larry Gagosian while visiting Basquiat’s studio the year it was created.

This month, 3rd grade has been learning about the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat (1960-1988) was a famous painter during the 80’s who had a loose, improvisational method. His career began as a homeless graffiti artist selling postcard-sized work on the street for $10 a piece, and ended as a famous, internationally-selling artist in the top tiers of the art world.
