Closely trimmed, bright green lawns have long been the standard for American landscaping. They’re consistent, and there are plenty of companies equipped to provide maintenance specifically for grass lawns. But lawns planted with non-native grasses, such as fescues and Kentucky bluegrass, also typically require more fertilizer, pesticides and water that can run up costs for homeowners. These species can also be affected by disease and pests to which native species have more resistance.

The property included plenty of space for outdoor dining, a fireplace, an updated pool, an open lawn, a bocce court and outdoor kitchen. We took advantage of these architectural elements to create focal points, adding dimension to the property and drawing people into the landscape.

Prairie Light | Valentine NWR, Nebraska

on to world domination, apparently! Not my normal shot, but I was attracted by the waves of flowing grasses matched by the alternating bands of sunlight and shadow. The flare in the upper left is from shooting into the sun with a 24mm lens, but seems to fit well with the image.
