Kalmia latifolia, mountain laurel in bloom, painted in watercolor by Gwen in 1980. (She was going to study under scientific illustrator Mary Jane Springer at UCONN, but she was not allowed to deviate from the Ph. D. plan allowed for her in paleobotany. Advisors usually make this call.)
