Osciladores a cristal
Oscilador es un circuito que genera una seal peridica, es decir, que produce una seal
peridica a la salida sin tener ninguna entrada peridica. Los osciladores se clasifican en
armnicos, cuando la salida es sinusoidal, o de relajacin, si generan una onda cuadrada.
Los osciladores de cristal son circuitos osciladores de retroalimentacin, en donde el circuito
tanque LC se reemplaza con un cristal para el componente que determina la frecuencia. El cristal
acta de manera similar al tanque LC, excepto que tiene varias ventajas inherentes. A los
cristales se les llama a veces resonadores de cristal y son capaces de producir frecuencias
precisas y estables para contadores de frecuencias, sistemas electrnicos de navegacin,
transmisores y receptores de radio, televisores, videocaseteras (VCR), relojes para sistemas de
computacin, y muchas otras aplicaciones.
Efecto Piezoelctrico
El efecto piezoelctrico ocurre cuando las tensiones mecnicas oscilatorias aplicadas a travs de
una estructura de lattice de cristal (escalera) generan oscilaciones elctricas, y viceversa. La
tensin puede ser apretando (compresin), estirando, torciendo (torsin), o cortando. Si la
tensin se aplica peridicamente, se alternar el voltaje de salida. En forma contraria, cuando
una tensin alterna se aplica a travs de un cristal en o cerca de la frecuencia de resonancia
natural del cristal, el cristal se romper en oscilaciones mecnicas. Esto se llama excitar un cristal
hasta producir vibraciones mecnicas. Las vibraciones mecnicas se llaman ondas acsticas
volumtricas (BAW) y son directamente proporcionales a la amplitud del voltaje aplicado.
Un nmero de sustancias de cristal naturales exhiben propiedades piezoelctricas: el cuarzo, la
sal de Rochelle, y la turmalina as como varias sustancias fabricadas como ADP, EDT y DKT. El
efecto piezoelctrico es ms pronunciado en la sal de Rochelle, razn por lo cual es la sustancia
que ms se utiliza en micrfonos de cristal. Sin embargo el cuarzo sinttico, se utiliza ms
seguido para el control de frecuencias en los osciladores debido a su permanencia, bajo
coeficiente de temperatura y alto Q mecnico.
El calor permite a las molculas moverse con mayor libertad y el campo elctrico fuerza a todos
los dipolos en el cristal a alinearse prcticamente todos en la misma direccin.

Coeficiente de Temperatura
Si se producen variaciones en la temperatura a la que trabaja el cristal, se producirn pequeos
corrimientos en la frecuencia de resonancia del cristal. El coeficiente de temperatura del cristal
de cuarzo, expresado en PPM (partes por milln), se especifica mediante la relacin (f / f ),
donde ( f) es el cambio de frecuencia y ( f ) es la frecuencia central por cada grado centgrado
de variacin de la temperatura, a f / f se lo suele graficar en funcin de la temperatura, esto
es:
Curva de Impedancia
Un cristal tiene dos frecuencias de resonancia, como se ven en la siguiente figura. La ms baja
es la frecuencia de Resonancia Serie indicada como fs. En ste punto el cristal se comporta como
una resistencia en el circuito, la impedancia est en un mnimo y la corriente que circula es la
mxima. A medida que se incrementa la frecuencia, el cristal pasa por la zona de resonancia
paralelo y llega a la frecuencia de Anti resonancia fa en la cual la impedancia es mxima, y las
reactancias de la L1 y la Co se cancelan. En ste punto, la corriente que circula por el cristal es la
mnima.
En la mayora de los cristales la frecuencia paralelo (fa) varia menos de 1% por encima de la
frecuencia serie.
Como podemos observar los sobretonos pares no generan tensin en los terminales pues dentro
del cuarzo hay el mismo nmero de zonas con compresin que con expansin, lo que resulta en
una tensin total nula. Sin embargo, los sobretonos impares s que generan una tensin neta en
los terminales, y por lo tanto tendremos tambin una resonancia acusada a dichas frecuencias,
aunque no tanto como la resonancia de la frecuencia fundamental. Son muchos los cristales que
se fabrican para ser utilizados en su tercer sobretono, consiguindose con ello una frecuencia
de oscilacin triple para el mismo espesor de la lmina de cuarzo. Sin embargo, si no se
modifican los osciladores, el cristal va a tener preferencia por oscilar en su tono fundamental.
Montura
De la figura del circuito bsico del oscilador resonante serie se ve que no existen componentes
para ajustar la frecuencia de oscilacin. R1 es utilizado para polarizar el inversor en su regin
O sea que ajustes en los capacitores de carga, darn lugar a una variacin pequea en la
frecuencia de oscilacin, permitiendo un ajuste fino de la misma. El cristal es resonante paralelo,
especificado para trabajar con una determinada capacidad de carga a la frecuencia deseada y
con la tolerancia y estabilidad deseadas.
La capacidad de carga (CL) para el cristal en este circuito puede ser calculada con la siguiente

es la capacidad electrosttica entre las dos placas paralelas del cristal. L tiene un valor
grande (de varios cientos de henrios) y queda determinado a partir de L=1/ 2 , donde es
la frecuencia de resonancia del cristal, puede ser tan grande como unos cientos de miles
ohmios y se determina con =L/Q, donde el factor de calidad Q est en el intervalo de
104 hasta 106 , los valores tpicos de un cristal de cuarzo de 2 MHZ son: Q=80 x 103 , / =350,
L= 520 mH, = 0,0012 pF y = 82. En la tabla 1 se muestran los valores tpicos de los
componentes para varios cortes comunes de cristales de cuarzo osciladores

Es posible tener una diversidad de osciladores de cristal, en la figura 2 (a) se muestra un oscilador
de cristal con amplificador operacional obtenido del de Colpitts; su circuito equivalente se
muestra en la figura 2 (b). Este circuito deber oscilar a la frecuencia de resonancia de la
inductancia L del cristal con el equivalente en serie de y + 1 2 /(1 + 2 ). Ya que es
mucho menor que , 1 o 2 , ser el dominante, y la frecuencia de oscilacin se puede

Aplicaciones
Cuando se requiere una gran estabilidad en la frecuencia se utilizan los osciladores de cristal.
Este es el caso de diversos tipos de transmisores.
El oscilador se controla con la llave para producir puntos y rayas, pero el amplificador incrementa
el nivel de potencia de la seal. El resultado es una seal ms intensa que tendr un alcance
mayor y producir comunicaciones ms confiables.

Moduladores de fm directa
Las seales FM se generan en forma directa, variando la frecuencia del oscilador de portadora,
o indirecta, cuando se convierte la modulacin de fase en modulacin de frecuencia. Nosotros
mostraremos las tcnicas para FM directa.
Se requiere que la frecuencia del oscilador de portadora vare en forma correspondiente con la
amplitud instantnea de la seal modulante (despus se aadi cualquier perturbacin
necesaria). La manera ms simple de lograrlo es usando un modulador de reactancia. Para su
funcionamiento utiliza la seal modulante para modificar una reactancia en el circuito que
determina la frecuencia. Una manera ordinaria de construir un modulador de reactancia es
instalar un varactor o diodo de reactancia variable dentro del circuito que determina la
frecuencia en el oscilador de portadora. En la figura se ilustra un oscilador controlado por cristal,
el varactor tiene una polaridad inversa y esta varia con la seal modulante.
En el oscilador controlado por cristal de la figura, su frecuencia cambia solo muy poco,
(regularmente solo unas dcimas de Hertz) con la modulacin. Siempre se necesita multiplicar
mucho la frecuencia con los moduladores de FM directa controlados por cristal.
Una forma ms moderna de generar FM directa es usar un VCO (oscilador controlado por
voltaje) de circuito integrado o un oscilador tambin de circuito integrado con un varactor
externo. En el caso de aplicaciones que requieren baja potencia como los telfonos inalmbricos
hasta es posible transmisor completo en un circuito integrado. El MC2833 es un ejemplo.
