Estimado Lector:
La industria minera involucra niveles muy altos en el
uso de equipos pesados lo que hace de ellos un tem indispensable para cualquier mina o planta. En general, los
procesos mineros implican una operacin continua de 24
horas al da y siete das a la semana, de modo que cualquier falla tiene consecuencias graves desde el punto de
produccin y cualquier ineficiencia se refleja de inmediato
en elevados costos de operacin. Por lo tanto, contar con
la suficiente cantidad de equipos, tecnologas de punta y
una mantencin constante es clave para una produccin
eficiente.
Para tomar correctas decisiones estratgicas es importante estar informado y saber cmo se compone el mercado
tanto para las empresas mineras y contratistas como los
proveedores. sta fue una de las razones para Editec S.A.
(grupo editorial que publica las revistas MINERIA CHILENA
y LATINOMINERIA, adems del anuario COMPENDIO DE
LA MINERIA CHILENA) de iniciar en 1994 el desarrollo de
este estudio, catastrando las flotas de equipos de la gran
minera en Chile, y luego tambin de Per y Argentina.
La presente versin 2009-2011 corresponde a la sptima edicin desde que hace 15 aos Editec S.A. decidiera
compilar esta informacin en forma sistemtica. La publicacin destaca por la exclusividad de los datos contenidos,
adems es el nico estudio que cubre tres pases con actividad minera como lo son Argentina, Chile y Per.
La base de datos ayuda a conocer las otas ms importantes, o con cuntos equipos cuenta cada mina o planta. Esto es
crucial para los proveedores de equipos, repuestos, insumos o
servicios de mantencin, que de esta forma, pueden estimar el
tamao de su mercado respectivo y encontrar nuevos nichos de
negocio.

The mining industry depends widely on
heavy equipment turning this item into an
indispensable piece for every mine or plant.
In general, the mining processes need to be
operative 24 hours a day and seven days a week
so that any failure can have bad consequences
and any inefficiency can be translated directly
in higher operation costs. Therefore it is vital to
have the precise quantity of equipment, highend technologies and permanent maintenance in
order to guarantee efficient production.
For both, miners and supplier companies,
it is important to have the right information and
to know how the market is structured in order
to take the correct strategic decisions. This was
one of the reasons why Editec S.A. (editorial
group which publishes the MINERIA CHILENA
and LATINOMINERIA magazines, and the annual
CHILEAN MINING COMPENDIUM) started in
1994 with the publication of this survey that
first registered the equipment of the big mining
companies in Chile, and later incorporated
operations in Peru and Argentina.
The current version 2009-2011 is the
7th edition since Editec decided 15 years ago
to gather this information systematically. The
publication particularly stands out due to the
exclusivity of the included data. Moreover, it is
the only survey that covers the three mining
countries Chile, Peru and Argentina.
The data base helps to locate the most
important fleets, or to know how many machines
are operating in each mine or plant. This is crucial for providers of equipment, spare parts, consumables and maintenance services, because
it facilitates an estimation of their respective
market size and to find new business niches.

machinery pool. In this way, they can receive new
offers from equipment or consumables suppliers
and so to choose the best and most economic
contractor.

La informacin se divide en dos partes: la primera

incluye una evaluacin estadstica del mercado chileno
que refleja la distribucin del mercado y la participacin
porcentual de las marcas ms importantes de maquinaria. El siguiente captulo muestra los equipos por pas y
faena, lo que sirve para encontrar respuestas a preguntas especficas respecto de la flota que opera una mina,
planta o empresa contratista.

The information is divided in two parts: the

first includes a statistical evaluation of the Chilean
market with the distribution and market shares of
the most important brands. The following chapter
shows all equipment by country and mining site,
which helps to find the right answer to specific
questions concerning the fleets that operate in
mines, plants or service companies.

Introduccin
Introduction
La industria minera en Chile, Per y Argentina juega un rol importante en la economa de cada pas y en
algunos minerales como el cobre, oro, plata y molibdeno ocupan un lugar importante en cuanto a produccin
y reservas a nivel mundial. En estos pases se pueden
encontrar grandes yacimientos de cobre, oro y plata y
sus faenas mineras se caracterizan por ser intensiva en
equipos y maquinarias de gran tamao, sobre todo en las
grandes faenas de Chile como Chuquicamata, El Teniente
o Escondida.

In the economy of each of the following countries,

Chile, Peru and Argentina, the mining industry plays an
important role and some minerals such as copper, gold,
silver and molybdenum have an important position in the
world in respect of production and reserves. Big copper,
gold and silver deposits can be found in the mentioned
countries, and one of the typical characteristics of said
mining activities is the widespread use of large equipment and machinery, especially in Chiles big operations
like Chuquicamata, El Teniente or Escondida.

Aunque la participacin en el PIB nacional no supera

5%, esta industria es vital por sus mercados coligados
tales como el suministro de las operaciones mineras y sus
contratistas con equipos, repuestos y servicios asociados,
insumos, etc., y el empleo indirecto.

Even though its share in the national GDP is less

tan 5%, this industry is essential due to its associated
markets such as the supply of mining operations and
their contractors with equipment, spare parts and services, supplies, indirect jobs, etc., and thus the indirect
employment.

El Catastro de Equipamiento Minero permite una mirada a este mbito proviendo datos tiles para la evaluacin de negocios y la preparacin de estrategias comerciales en el sector de equipos minero o industriales y sus
insumos correspondientes.

The Mining Equipment Survey gives a deeper

insight in this eld and makes available useful information to evaluate businesses and prepare commercial
strategies within the scope of the mining or industrial
equipment sector and their corresponding consumables.

1.1 Caractersticas del Estudio

Features of the Survey

El Catastro de Equipamiento considera los equipos ms

relevantes usados en las faenas mineras a rajo abierto, subterrnea, y en las plantas de procesos de concentracin de
minerales, y permite de esta manera conocer en detalle la infraestructura en equipos usados en las etapas de extraccin
y procesamiento de minerales con que cuenta cada empresa
minera. Adicionalmente el estudio considera los equipos de
mina con que cuentan los principales contratistas que prestan
servicios a la minera en Chile (Cp. 3.2).

The Equipment Survey considers the most

important equipment used in open-pit and underground
mining operations as well as ore concentration processing plants. In this way, it provides detailed information on
the equipment infrastructure used in the ore extraction
and processing stages of each mining company. Additionally, the study also includes mine equipment of all
main contractors that render services to Chilean mining
companies (Chapter 3.2).

Una novedad de esta edicin es la base de correas transportadoras que se presenta en mayor detalle en Captulo 4 junto
con una breve introduccin explicando la dinmica de este mercado.

New in this edition is the data base of conveyor

belts that appears in more detail in Chapter 4 together
with a brief introduction that explains the dynamic
prevailing in this market.

Cabe resaltar que la principal fuerza de este estudio reside

en el detalle de la informacin, vale decir, la descripcin de los
equipos con que cuenta cada una de las empresas incluidas.
El nivel de detalle es acucioso de los principales equipos de las
empresas mineras y contratistas junto a sus caractersticas, lo
que le permitir disponer de una valiosa informacin para sus
propios anlisis y conclusiones.

It is worth highlighting that the main strength

of this survey consists in the information detail; i.e.,
the description of the equipment of each company
registered. The level of detail and characteristics of
each main piece of equipment in use in every mining
company and contractor is highly accurate providing
valuable information that can be used for analyses and
conclusions.

SU CARCTER INTERNACIONAL
Fue en 2003 cuando los editores de esta publicacin decidieron ampliar a otros mercados el Catastro de Equipamiento
incorporando los equipos y maquinarias usados en las faenas
mineras que operan en el Per (Cp. 3.4). La industria minera
en este pas cuenta con importantes yacimientos de cobre y oro
principalmente, en donde la extraccin y procesamiento de minerales se realiza a gran escala mediante equipos y maquinarias
de gran tamao.

INTERNATIONAL NATURE
In 2003 the editors of this publication decided
to expand the Equipment Survey to other markets
incorporating equipment and machinery used in mining
operations in Peru (Chapter 3.4). The mining industry
in this country has important and large-scale copper
and gold deposits which use large equipment and
machinery in ore mining and processing activities.

Con el objeto de agregar valor al Catastro de Equipamiento, desde la versin 2007-2009 adems se incluyen los equipos y maquinarias usados en las faenas mineras ms importantes de Argentina
(Cp. 3.3).

With the purpose of adding value to the Equipment Survey, equipment and machineries used by
the most signicant mining operations in Argentina
(Chapter 3.3) have also been added in the version
2007-2009.

FORMATO DE DATOS
La informacin contenida de las empresas chilenas se presenta
por tipo de equipo (Cp. 2) y por empresa (Cp. 3). En la bsqueda
por equipos se puede apreciar la participacin de mercado para cada
marca, mientras que por empresa se puede dimensionar el parque de
equipos y maquinaria con que cuenta cada faena minera. En ambas
bsquedas se puede obtener informacin en cuanto a: marca, modelo, cantidades, antigedad y caractersticas generales de los equipos.

THE MAIN STRENGTH OF THIS SURVEY

CONSISTS IN THE INFORMATION DETAIL; I.E., THE

DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT

OF EACH COMPANY REGISTERED.
DATA FORMAT
The information on Chilean companies is presented in two ways: 1) the type of equipment (Chapter
2), and 2) by companies (Chapter 3). When searching by
equipment, it is possible to notice the market share that
corresponds to each brand. On the other hand, when
searching by company it is possible to realize the size
of the equipment and machinery eet of each mining
operation. Information about brands, models, quantities,
age and general characteristics of the equipment can be
obtained through both searches.

Este captulo considera una evaluacin estadstica y la participacin

de mercado de las marcas, estructurado segn los pases y tipo de
equipos. Se describe la cantidad y distribucin de marcas registradas
en este estudio.
Se detallan los equipos que operan en Chile, segn los procesos siguientes: Mina Rajo Abierto, Mina Subterrnea y Planta de Proceso.
Los listados se estructuran de la siguiente forma: Faena, marca, cantidad total de equipo por faena, cantidad por modelo o marca, modelo,
capacidad, potencia y antigedad.

En el caso de Argentina y Per no se incluye una evaluacin estadstica debido a la poca cantidad de empresas incluidas no representando
lo suciente el mercado.

This chapter includes a statistical evaluation jointly with an analysis of market shares, structured by countries and equipment types. It describes the
number and distribution of brands, registered by this survey.
In the first part of the chapter, all the equipment operating in Chile is described, according to the following processes: Open-pit Mine, Underground
Mine and Processing Plant. The listings are structured as follows: Mining
site, brand, total quantity per site, quantity per model or brand, model, capacity, power and age.
In the case of Argentina and Per, no statistics were considered due to
the low number of companies surveyed and the low representativity of the
sample size.
