GOING TO THE MOVIES

My class is going to go to the movies on a field trip next week. We have to get
permission slips signed before we go. We are going to ask our parents if they can
drive to the movie theater. We are going to see a movie that tells the story from
a book we read. We love it when movies are made from books. It is fun to
compare the movie to the book. I usually like the book better.
We are going to get to the movies early so we can buy popcorn. Some of us are
going to buy candies and slushes too.
We all enjoy watching the movie.
When we return to school, we are
going to talk about things that were
in the movie and the book. The
movie and book are similar. We all
agree that we like the book better
though. Books let you picture the
characters any way you want to
picture them.

Christmas
Christmas which is celebrated on December 25th is an important Christian
holiday. The origin of the word "Christmas" comes from "Christ" and the "Holy.
Mass”. It is believed that the day commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ
although a lot of people doubt that the Day corresponds to the actual date of his
birth. In spite of its Christian origin, Christmas is also celebrated by a lot of non-
Christian countries and the celebration includes a lot of non-religious customs.
People exchange gifts and greeting cards. Homes are decorated with Christmas
trees, light and garlands. Dinners are planned with special food and all the
families gather to have a lot of fun.
A central imaginary figure in Christmas is Father Christmas, also called Santa
Claus. He is believed to fly on his sleigh bringing gifts for children.
Christmas is also an opportunity for economic growth. It has become an
important period for business activity. Shops make a lot of profit and a lot of
countries realized this economic impact.

I RAN A MARATHON EVERY DAY FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS

On January 1st, I started my world run at 7.00 a.m. in Greenwich in London. I ran
every day from about 8.00 in the morning to 4.00 or 5.00 in the afternoon. Nearly
45 kilometers a day. (A marathon every day!!) I slept in a tent or in hotels. First I
ran through Europe. In Sweden the temperature was -11 degrees. Russia was
difficult with a lot of snow and dangerous roads. In Siberia people invited me into
their houses for food and drink. In Japan one night I couldn’t find my hotel
because I couldn’t speak Japanese. In
Austria it was summer and the
temperature was 35 down the east coast
to New York. Then I went back to Europe
and crossed the finishing line in
Greenwich on October 23rd – 22 months
after I started. I was the first runner to
run all around the world. 26,000
kilometers and 26 pairs of running shoes!!
What’s my next adventure going to be?
I’m going to run from the north of Europe
to South Africa, then I’m going to fly to
Ushuaia in South America, and then run to
North America. It’s going to take two
years.

Stewart had a terrible day the other day. It was the day of his vacation to Spain
but it was a nightmare. He left the house at 10 o’clock in the morning and caught
a taxi to the airport. Stewart went to the check-in with his luggage. When the
man who worked for the airline asked for his passport, Stewart became very
upset. Where was his passport? Stewart realized
he didn’t have his passport with him. What a
disaster!

He jumped back into the taxi and told the driver

to take him home. The driver drove quickly and
Martin arrived back at his house in twenty
minutes. He ran into the house and went into his
bedroom. He found his passport on the bedside
table and left the house again. But the taxi
wasn’t there! Where was the taxi!
