Malcolm McDowell launches campaign to fund George A. Romero's Walk of Fame star

How can George A. Romero not have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Without the late director, there would be no Creepshow, no Martin, no Dawn of the Dead, no Night of the Living Dead. And without that latter, zombie genre-creating film, there would be no Return of the Living Dead, no Shaun of the Dead, and no Walking Dead.

In 2016, it was announced that the filmmaker would finally be getting a Walk of Fame star and today, a month after his passing, a campaign was launched on the Indiegogo platform Generosity to seek complete funding for what has sadly become a posthumous tribute. The campaign is supported by Romero’s friend, legendary actor Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Cat People), who has filmed a video urging people to contribute.

“George was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” explains McDowell in the clip. “Unfortunately, he passed. We really need your help in funding this, because it’s very expensive to do it, and he was such a fine, fine man, a beautiful man, great friend of mine, and also a great artist, and very deserving to be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — in fact, long overdue.”

“The total cost for everything is well over $60,000,” Matt O’Neill, one of the campaign’s organizers, tells EW. “We have already raised and payed for about half of the star fund. With this campaign, we are trying to raise the final completion funds.”
