Father of the Bride actor teases third film: 'I know there's a script'

George Newbern says that we’re one step closer to a third Father of the Bride movie.

The actor revealed in an interview with Us Weekly that Charles Shyer, director and co-writer of the first two films in the Steve Martin franchise, has completed a script for another installment and that there’s some chatter around getting the original cast back together. The last film, Father of the Bride Part II, was released back in 1995.

“Charles Shyer wrote a script. I know there’s a script out there. And there’s talk,” Newbern told Us Weekly. “I don’t know how far it got but I’m sure most of the cast would be into it if the script was right. So maybe that’s just a question of that happening.”

Father of the Bride starred Steve Martin as a possessive father who struggled to let go of his daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams) when she got engaged to Bryan (Newbern), a friendly 20-something who came from a wealthy family, after only knowing him for three months. Diane Keaton co-starred as Martin’s wife and Martin Short memorably played wedding planner Franck Eggelhoffer. Both of the actors, along with the film’s main trio, returned for the sequel in 1995.

While the original was a success both with critics and at the box office, Part 2 earned mixed reviews and fell off slightly in its commercial performance, making $76 million domestically. The sequel ended with Bryan and Annie moving from California to Boston after the latter accepted a job there. A third movie, meanwhile, has been rumored for years; Martin denied involvement in another sequel way back in 2014.

Newbern, still best known for his turns in both Father of the Bride movies, has also played the recurring role of Charlie in ABC’s Scandal since its first season.
