In the closing moments of the show's wild day of Hot Topics on Wednesday, the 82-year-old comedian paused Whoopi Goldberg's plug for cohost Sara Haines' upcoming appearance on the show's Behind the Table companion podcast to ask a question about her colleague's romantic past with another woman. "It’s crazy, but Sara is on the podcast today with her fabulous parents, who are here with us today," Goldberg said as the show's camera cut to a shot of Haines' parents sitting in the studio audience, before Behar cut in. "I have to ask her a question," Behar interrupted. "Are you going to bring up that lesbian relationship you said you had, back at Smith [College]?" Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Joy Behar on 'The View'. ABC Haines and her cohosts appeared to be stunned by the question, with Haines looking toward her parents to say, "Dad, earmuffs! Earmuffs!" Alyssa Farah Griffin reminded Behar, "that was off-air that she told us that," before Sunny Hostin observed, "now it's on-air!" Haines attempted to move on from the moment, joking, "It’s a good thing my dad doesn’t always watch." Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for The View for comment. The moment came after a prior segment that saw the cohosts debating whether or not it was appropriate to remain in friendly contact with past romantic partners, with Haines admitting that she recently attempted to contact one of her exes. "I went to Smith College, which leans left, and I once substituted for my brother, who is gay, on a New York volleyball team of all-gay men and never left the league," she told TV Insider. "So now I have more gay friends than straight ones. Combine all that and it leaves me somewhere in the middle. I’m a melting pot of beliefs." Haines, 47, is currently married to Max Shifrin, and the couple have three children together. The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
