WhoLock is a crossover between the two fandoms Doctor Who and Sherlock, which had huge followings on Livejournal, Youtube, and Tumblr. The Wholock fandom was most active in the early to mid 2010s—2011-2013 appearing to the most intense period—before tapering off.

The most popular form of fanwork were gif-sets made to look like scenes where characters from the different shows are interacting, but it also inspired fanfic, fanart, and vids that were styled to look like a trailer.

Fandom

The main characters in WhoLock are generally Sherlock Holmes and John Watson from Sherlock, and The Doctor—Eleven being the most popular choice, although one can also occasionally find the Tenth Doctor or even the Ninth—and the Doctor's companion, the most popular choice being Amy Pond, but one can also find Rose Tyler and Jack Harkness.

History

The first available use of the "wholock" tag on Tumblr is not related to the fandom, but its use suggests the term had been circulating prior to this date. The first post using the tag for fandom purposes was 13 September 2010.[1] The first Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover fic on Fanfiction.net was published on 12 December 2009.[2] The first crossover on AO3 appears to be from 6 August 2010[3] but the first use of the "wholock - Fandom" tag on AO3 was 20 December 2012.[4]

Pairings

Aside from Sherlock/John and Doctor/Rose Tyler which are popular in the individual and the crossover fandoms, Amy Pond/Sherlock Holmes and Doctor/Sherlock Holmes are the most popular pairings. Rose Tyler/Sherlock Holmes is also a common pairing for the crossover.

There is also gen fanworks, that focus on the platonic friendships between Sherlock & The Doctor, John & The Doctor, Sherlock & the Doctor's companions, etc.

Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Second Meeting: The Doctor having met Sherlock or John as a child and then meeting him again as an adult
  • Angst: there appears to be quite a bit of angsty fanworks, with Sherlock being separated from John, or Sherlock meeting Whoverse villains, like the Cybermen, the Daleks, or the Weeping Angels, and that sometimes having dire consequences.
  • Dalek Sherlock: Sherlock investigating something he shouldn't and being changed into a Dalek, like Clara's future self Oswin Oswald
  • Fobwatch Fic: Sherlock being a fobwatched Time Lord
  • The Doctor saving Sherlock: the Doctor saving Sherlock from his death, via time travel or some other sci-fi type intervention. Sometimes this is via John's request after seeking out the Doctor, or the Doctor feels Sherlock must be saved for other reasons.
  • Companions: Sherlock and John, or Sherlock alone, travelling with the Doctor for a time. It was somewhat popular to have Sherlock travelling with the Doctor when he was presumed dead.
  • Casefic: Sherlock and John investigating a case and they meet the Doctor, usually because the case involves sci-fi elements like time travel or aliens
  • The Master & Moriarty: Simm!Master and Moriarty being connected in some fashion, be it as friends, rivals, or Moriarty not being strictly human.
  • Supporting Characters: although Sherlock, John, The Doctor and his companions are usually the central focus of fanworks, but it is not unusual, especially in fanfic, to include a variety of secondary characters, some examples being: Mycroft, Greg Lestrade, River Song, and The Master, among others.
