The Irish Hell Fire Club, founded in 1735 had as 1st president, Richard Chappell Whaley, a descendant of Oliver Cromwell.( Nick-named “Burn-Chapel” Whaley, based on his affinity for setting fire to Catholic churches.) Members drank “scaltheen”, whiskey and hot butter, and a chair was left empty at each meeting-- for the Devil. Their mascot was a black cat. In England & in Ireland, members of the Order of the Golden Dawn, Hellfire Club, Freemasons, & Druids, were often interconnected.
