The Roman circus was a large open air venue used for public events in the ancient Roman Empire. Circus Maximus was an ancient Roman chariot racing stadium & mass entertainment venue. The originator of the modern circus has been attributed to Philip Astley, an English cavalry officer, who set up the first modern amphitheater for displaying horse riding tricks in 1768. The first circus in the U.S. was opened in Philadelphia in 1793. George Washington attended a performance there that same year.
