Joan Riviere (1883 – 1962) was a British psychoanalyst and offered some of the earliest English translations Sigmund Freud's writings. In 1929, Riviere published one of her most influential writings, "Womanliness as a Masquerade." In the article she examines the sexual development of women and argues that femininity is a defensive mask that is put on to hide masculinity.
