‘Forbidden Games: Surrealist and Modernist Photography’ at the Cleveland Museum of Art shows that surrealism could be playful, or obscene, or exquisitely beautiful.

Maar's photographic experiments reject the pretense of naturalism in straightforward photography and attempt to achieve something much deeper than resemblance.

This haunting show, in the cool gallery spaces high above the city that Dora Maar knew so well, makes it clear that she was indeed a star, a leading figure in Surrealist photo-montage of the mid-1930s.
