DIY Easy Storage Shelf (For The Side Of My Fridge)!
I recently just renovated our small kitchen (you can check out the full makeover on my YouTube channel), and wanted to make use of the empty space on the side of my fridge. When you have a tiny kitchen, it’s important to try to use all of the space you can. So, I create an easy storage shelf to hold my cutting boards, wine bottles, and more in just one weekend of work. Here’s how!
Pantry Makeover Reveal!! Complete with Murphy Door!! | Pantry Makeover Reveal!!! Complete with Murphy Door!! | By Life Is What You Make It | Alright, I know y'all have been waiting on the edge of your seat for this one. For the last five or 6 years that we've been in this house, this is the pantry that we've been working with. It's four foot deep, three foot wide. The shelves are two foot deep and it just wasn't functional. So, I built a couple cabinets to go inside so that way I could add drawers to the bottom, I'm a big fan of drawers over deep shelves and because this pantry is going to take me a while. I'm a flight attendant full time so I'm out of town for three days a week or so. I'm trying to work in this pantry without taking everything out at one time. I got the bottom two shelves removed with the help of my husband they did not want to come out and then I got the two cabinets installed. I added the face frame to the front made out of one by two primed pine. Buy it already primed is a little bit more expensive but it's completely worth it to me. Then I made the countertop out of two pieces of plywood that I screwed together and I put some marble wallpaper on the top and installed it. It's not the greatest solution but I think it'll work great for the pantry. Then I got to work building the drawers. I just put these together with wood glue and brad nails. And they hold just fine. When we bought the house the last homeowners left wire racks and I'm just not a huge fan of the look of them. And I had a better solution. Let's just cut a huge hole in the drywall and use it as shelves. I used my Milwaukee oscillating tool to take it out and I also removed this stud. Don't worry it's not a load bearing wall. For all you TikTok experts that think that it is. I did reframe it so the support is there. Don't worry. My house isn't going to come crumbling down from one little stud. Then I got to work building the shelves. I made it out of half inch plywood and I put pole wrap on the back. The pole wrap to protect It fit like a freaking glove. Then I framed it which is the reason I left the half inch plywood sticking out a little bit. Then I got the rest of the shelves removed and I started on the wall treatment. You can also see that I installed the drawers here. The inspo pics that I found on Pinterest all had shiplap so I'm adding shiplap to this room. And then I decided that one in wall shelf wasn't enough and I wanted one on the other wall. Don't worry I have this magical stud finder that checks for electrical so I knew the electrical went up and not down. So that's why I put the in-wall shelf underneath the light switch and not above it. I'm adding the shiplap on all the walls in this pantry and not just the back wall. And then because of the cost of corbels are kind of expensive, I went ahead and decided to make my own. This is actually super easy to do. I just cut a bunch of pieces and traced it and then routed the edges. I got them installed with the next two shelves up and these are only a foot deep instead of the two foot deep they were. I just stacked two pieces of plywood for the thickness. And this isn't really necessary but I couldn't go on knowing that I had the old trim on inside of this pantry even though you can't see it. And because we're going fancy in here, I added ground molding. And instead of edge banding here, I used a decorative trim because if you're not doing the most, what are you doing? Once all that was installed, I would filled and caulked everything and even used a bit of bondo and then I got to work spraying. And by the way, this Graco sprayer makes it such a fast job. It's been four days in this new pantry. Since I changed out this light switch. In four days it's too long. Paston wants to change it again. So we have this new motion sensor light switch from Top Greener so let's put it in. I I am not the biggest fan of working with electrical so my handy dandy live-in electrician AKA my husband installed it for me. So now we have a motion censored light in here. Now because we have some bigger items that I wanted to be able to store up top. I went ahead and made this top shelf about 18 inches. And this is what it looked like before the paint touch ups and that top shelf and this is what it looks like now. It's really coming together. I was almost done with this pantry and then I had this crazy idea to install a Murphy Door because like I said if you're not doing the most I started by installing this scrap piece of oak on the bottom so that way it all has something to attach the Murphy Door hardware to and then I started with the bottom piece of the cabinet to make sure it would fit to determine the width and depth of the cabinet. It didn't fit the first time but it was close. I just trimmed off half an inch and then it fit perfectly. I removed the old door and then I tried to install this one but I calculated wrong and the Murphy door was two pieces of plywood too short. Apparently, I didn't think I included that in my calculations and had but we got some pieces put on the top to make up for that room and look, it works even though the opening is pretty narrow. I wanted some texture on this so I added some beadboard up top and then I installed the top shelves and then for another face frame, I built this with pocket holes beforehand and then installed it. Brad Nails is all that's really necessary to hold this on and because this Murphy door is not going to have a handle because I don't want it to look like a door, I added a **** ton of Brad Nails right there on the face frame where you'll be pulling on it. I couldn't wait to get these jars put up there first of all to see if they'll stay still and not fall off and because I thought they were super cute. Now the framing of this door was a lot of trial and error and I just had to figure out as I went. I was originally going to paint this door accessible beige by Sherwin Williams because the rest of my doors are that color but I want this to look like a cabinet not a door. So I painted it pewter green by Charwin Williams like my cabinets. Then I got to work building the doors for the bottom and I'm using butt hinges and I'm going to try to do a more look and I chiseled out the place that the hinges will go so that they will be in set. And trust me when I say this was my first time so they're by no means perfect. But everybody's gotta start somewhere right? And it did take a few attempts to get it perfect. I was planning on leaving the drawers just open like this but I wasn't really a fan of the look so I went ahead and made drawer front for them. I got the shelves installed on the inside of the cabinet for the front of the Murphy door and then I added a drop down door drawer. I don't know you call this above that. I did have trim a little bit off the top because the door didn't fit perfectly the first time. And for all the guys that just had to point out that the drywall was all messed up up there that I should fix it. Don't worry I'm not going to build this huge **** Murphy door and not fix the drywall. But of course they just had to say it. And this is what it looks like with those drawer fronts put on and the hardware but it still felt incomplete to me. So I got on Amazon and found some peel and stick floor tiles that I'm obsessed with. I was worried that they'd be a little bit dark in here at first but they are Perfect. And now for a little tour, we got some foil and flour and stuff in the first drawer. We got a whole bunch of Ziplocs in the second because we shop at Costco. The third drawer has paper plates and plastic utensils for our barbecues we like to have. Chips and bread in the right top drawer and you see it does clear here by about a quarter of an inch. Lots of people were concerned about that. Some snacks and pasta in the second drawer and to go containers in the bottom right. What do you think? Is this a million times better than the crowded pantry it was before? I might be by but I'm a little bit obsessed. And we have a lot of our most used items in the front of this. Some drink mixes, cap treats, and stuff like that in the front of the cabinet and then that drop down thing has a **** tin of magic erasers because I accidentally ordered them in bulk off of Amazon. Alright, what do you think? What's your favorite and least favorite part of this makeover? And it is okay to tell me what you would have done different. Just don't be an **** If you'd like the link to the things that I use in this pantry, just check the comments.
