Mucilage (represented as CEM) is abundantly present in Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott or taro an... more Mucilage (represented as CEM) is abundantly present in Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott or taro and is a water-soluble neutral polysaccharide that can act as a binder, thickening agent, and matrix agent in the pharmaceutical fields of research. Presence of hydroxyl groups on its surface structure allows chemical modification. This study describes in details the synthesis and characterization of its graft copolymer with polylactide (CEM-g-PLA). The polymerization has performed using both the microwave irradiation and conventional methods. Ring opening polymerization of lactide onto the mucilage carried out in presence of stannous octoate as catalyst in chloroform medium produced CEM-g-PLA copolymer under optimum condition. Peptide Nucleic Acids (PNAs) are the DNA/RNA analogues in which sugar-phosphate backbone is repla... more Peptide Nucleic Acids (PNAs) are the DNA/RNA analogues in which sugar-phosphate backbone is replaced by N-2-aminoethylglycine repeating units. PNA contains neutral backbone hence due to the absence of electrostatic repulsion, its hybridization shows remarkable stability towards complementary oligonucleotides. PNAs are highly resistant to cleavage by chemicals and enzymes due to the substrate specific nature of enzymes and therefore not degraded inside the cells. PNAs are emerging as new tools in the market due to their applications in antisense and antigene therapies by inhibiting translation and transcription respectively. Hence, several methods based on PNAs have been developed for designing various anticancer and antigene drugs, detection of mutations or modulation of PCR reactions. The duplex homopurine sequence of DNA may also be recognized by PNA, forming firm PNA/DNA/PNA triplex through strand invasion with a looped-out DNA strand. PNAs have also been found to replace DNA probes in varied investigative purposes. There are several disadvantages regarding cellular uptake of PNA, so modifications in PNA backbone or covalent coupling with cell penetrating peptides is necessary to improve its delivery inside the cells. In this review, hybridization properties along with potential applications of PNA in the field of diagnostics and pharmaceuticals are elaborated.

Current research work involves the cost-effective microwave (MW) synthesis of waste soybean oil-based gemini imidazolinium surfactants (GIS) having a carbonate linkage in its spacer moiety. Structural characterizations of the materials have been done using FT-IR, 1H-NMR and [Formula: see text]C-NMR. Using indigenous and natural material as base and MW as energy source for synthesizing the GIS with easily degradable chemical moiety make them to be labeled as green surfactants.

ABSTRACT Curcumin (Cur), a natural colorant found in the roots of the Turmeric plant, has been re... more ABSTRACT Curcumin (Cur), a natural colorant found in the roots of the Turmeric plant, has been reported for the first time as photoinitiator for the copolymerization of styrene (Sty) and methylmethacrylate (MMA). The kinetic data, inhibiting effect of benzoquinone and ESR studies indicate that the polymerization proceeds via a free radical mechanism. The system follows ideal kinetics (R p α[Cur] 0.5 [Sty] 0.97 [MMA] 1 ). The reactivity ratios calculated by using the Finemann–Ross and Kelen‐Tudos models were r 1 (MMA)=0.46 and r 2 (Sty)=0.52. IR and NMR analysis confirmed the structure of the copolymer. NMR spectrum showing methoxy protons as three distinct groups of resonance between 2.2–3.75 and phenyl protons of styrene at 6.8–7.1 confirmed the random nature of the copolymer. The mechanism for formation of radicals and random copolymer of styrene and MMA [Sty‐co‐MMA] is also discussed.
