Adventures About To Begin Kindle Edition
After the death of his grandfather, Noah’s life is thrown into chaos as he faces a repressed past which threatens everything he believes to be true. In the course of trying to come to terms with his loss, Noah must also navigate a difficult relationship with his sister, Kelly, as they reflect on their turbulent childhood – when they were taken from London to live in the Kent countryside following the breakdown of their parents’ marriage.
Set between the 1970s and the more recent past, Adventures About To Begin chronicles a collapsing marriage as experienced by its children and reflects on how memory shapes our decisions at crucial junctures during our lives. It is both funny and touching, as well as a sensitive insight into British family life during a period of great social and cultural change.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2023I love retrospective books. The nostalgia of youth decades ago. Present day shaped by those events. It's a great way to do a self check. How did my events alter my decisions? Shape the events?
Noah's experiences are realistic, relatable and all the feelings. I highly recommend this read!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2023I'm going to be honest. It's been awhile since I finished a book and said, "WTF did I just read?" This is one of those rare books - but that doesn't mean I didn't like it.
This book was kind of weird. Disclaimer: I don't think weird is a bad thing. For much of it - and honestly kind of all the way until the end - I kinda didn't get what I was reading. Like, I didn't get the point of the book. But as soon as I realized that it's a slice of life - which isn't necessarily my favorite genre - it all became clear.
I really enjoyed the narrator. He had some issues that might make him controversial or hard to love for others, but I really liked him. And I enjoyed the representation in the book - even if it was mired through the lens of the 70s. I enjoyed the difficult family dynamics, even though it was hard to handle sometimes. The sibling relationships were very interesting. The ones between parents and child were troublesome and disturbing across generations.
It was a pretty quick, interesting read. But if you're looking for a clear, concise plot with clear resolutions and outcomes, this isn't the book for you. Or I'm dense. When I turned that last page, I was like, wait, that's seriously not it, right? I'm inclined to ask if we're getting a second book. So many questions have been left unanswered. Unless it's the kind of book you have to read again to catch all the subtle clues. The author great at foreshadowing things that would happen later in the book, which is why I think I feel so unresolved - several things seemed like foreshadowing that never got finally resolved.
I will definitely keep an eye out for more books - especially if there's a sequel to this one. I need some resolution! But, at the same time, that's life. Sometimes you don't get it.
If you enjoy slice of life books that don't necessarily tie everything up into a nice neat bow at the end, this is the book for you.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2023A well written family drama that pulls you in from the beginning and doesn’t let go until you reach the end. You will feel all the emotions as you read this and in certain situations you feel as you can truly connect with the characters. You’ll be rooting for one and the next you’ll be wondering why that certain thing happened. It flows well and you’re able to keep up with everything that is going on even though it flips back and forth between two timelines. If this intrigues you the least bit, I definitely recommend you pick this one up!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2023This is the story of Noah as an adult and looking into his past as a child. I didn’t grow up in the 70’s so it was interesting to read about his childhood especially as he find out who he wants to be. Noah’s grandfather was an important person in his life so when he passed away, it brings back memories from his childhood. I enjoyed Noah’s childhood stories and it was also a reminder that kids (myself included) used to run to a friends house in the neighborhood for a day of fun. The title has a very fitting please in the story and is perfect for the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant family drama
This is such a great read. So enjoyable I read it over a weekend. Well-rounded and credible character have honest interaction with natural and realistic pace, and they respond to each others personalities, actions and intentions.
Dialogue is important for me as a reader and these interactions are spot on.
The story itself (a close-knit family’s reaction to the death of the grandfather of Noah , Noah being the story teller) is well formed and recognisable.
There has got to be a follow up (has to) as there are a few things that left me wanting more information about how we got to where we are at the end of the book and also what happens next
Comedy meets tragedy meets drama in a fast paced tale of family life.

What an enjoyable read! Loved the humour, and also following the family along with their life's journey, definitely needs a follow up book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and moving
I didn't experience the 70' but this book made me wish I had. It is very vivid and the dialog is fantastic. Highly recommended. Be warned, parts of it are very sad and if your parents divorced you will relate to this book.
