After October 10, 2024, an update called KB5001716 was distributed. The update contents are 'includes new user interface features for Windows Update,' but the following two points are also added as notes.
After this update is installed, Windows may attempt to download and install feature updates on your device if the currently installed Windows version is approaching or has reached the end of support. Feature updates provide new features and keep your device more secure.
After you install this update, Windows may periodically display notifications if Windows Update needs to keep your device up to date, if there are issues that might prevent you from being protected from threats, etc. For example, you might see a notification if you're running a version of Windows that's no longer supported or if your device doesn't meet the minimum hardware requirements for the currently installed version of Windows.
According to technology media Neowin, the patch was quietly installed on Windows 10 PCs after the release of the cumulative update in October. Technology media TechRadar pointed out that 'KB5001716 is an update to encourage Windows 10 and 11 users to update, and for Windows 10 users, it will further encourage them to migrate to Windows 11. In some cases, as Microsoft points out, PCs may be forced to upgrade to Windows 11.'
TechRadar also noted, 'What's odd is that if you search the internet for KB5001716, you'll find evidence that this update has mysteriously appeared before. As reported on various forums, such as Reddit, KB5001716 appeared in April 2024 and was distributed to PCs as early as October 2023. Perhaps these are revisions of KB5001716 that are now being redistributed.'
Support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025. Microsoft is offering paid 'Extended Security Updates for Personal Use' that will allow users to receive security updates even after support ends, but is encouraging existing Windows 10 users to upgrade.
