How To Grill Ribeye Steak
- Let it rest – Remove ribeye from the refrigerator. Let rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Bringing it to room temperature helps the steak cook more evenly.
- Prep – Clean the grill grates, oil them and preheat the grill to 450 – 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Season & Grill – Place steaks on the hot grill, sprinkle the steak seasoning over the top, and close the lid. Grill on the first side for about 6 minutes. This gets those nice grill marks and will sear in the juices. Flip steak over, season again, close the lid, and grill an additional 5-6 minutes to get to about 145 degrees Fahrenheit. This is medium to medium well. If you want a rare or medium-rare steak, cook less on both sides.
- Rest & Serve – Remove steaks from the grill and rest them on a plate or cutting board for five minutes, tented with foil. This is essential, so don’t skip this step. It helps redistribute the juices after it cooks and makes your steaks so tender and juicy!
Pro Tips
- Take the time to remove the steak from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before you are going to grill it. This will bring it to room temperature. The benefit of this is that it will cook more evenly.
- We used our homemade beef seasoning which we think is amazing, but your favorite steak seasoning is the perfect option also. Even a sprinkle of coarse salt and ground black pepper will make it mouth-watering.
- The steak we used is 12-16 oz so it will be more than one serving.

How long do you grill a ribeye steak on the grill?
The cook time is going to depend a lot on the size of the steak, its thickness, whether it’s boneless or bone in, and how hot the grill is.
We like our ribeye medium to medium-well done which takes about 10 to 12 minutes (5-6 minutes per side) over high heat on a gas grill.
What Temperature Should I Grill My Steak To?
This depends on your preference of doneness when it comes to enjoying your steak. It is essential to have a good instant-read meat thermometer to monitor the internal temperature of your steak.
- Medium-Rare – 145 degrees Fahrenheit (about 3-4 minutes per side)
- Medium – 160 degrees Fahrenheit (about 4-5 minutes per side)
- Well-Done – 170 degrees Fahrenheit (about 5-6 minutes per side)
Do I close the lid when cooking steak?
You sure do! Closing the lid will keep the temperature inside the grill consistent, allowing your steak to cook evenly. As a result, you will have perfect ribeye steak!
Can I use a marinade?
Yes, you can marinade ribeye steaks, too! If you are looking for a great steak marinade recipe, I’ve got you covered. Perfectly grilled steak is never out of reach with these!
- The acid in balsamic vinegar tenderizes steak beautifully in our Balsamic Steak Marinade
- Garlic Marinade is put together super quickly with pantry staples
- Red Wine Marinade has a perfectly subtle red wine flavor that is sure to impress everyone at the supper table
- Italian Steak Marinade is a perfect summertime
Is Bone-In Ribeye Steak better than Boneless Ribeye?
Bone-in steaks are often juicier but they can be more challenging to cook – it’s harder to know when they’re done! That’s why we like boneless rib eye steak – they really are just as delicious and easier to cook.
What To Do With Leftovers
Store leftover steak (if there is any!) in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days.
Reheat in the microwave if you’re in a hurry, but add a dab of water to your plate to add some moisture so the steak doesn’t dry out. You can also heat it up on the stove, covered, with a bit of water.
Steak sandwiches, steak and eggs and adding steak to a caesar salad are great options to use up delicious leftovers any time of the day!
This is one of our favorite steak recipes and I can’t wait for you to try it! Perfectly seasoned and wonderfully grilled, this steak is just what you need on a summer evening. These will be the best ribeye steaks you eat all summer long!
