The animation module will only save files if one of the video backends is installed on the machine. This means there's an optional dependence on these programs that should be listed in the INSTALL file. More importantly, a supported version of each of these programs should be referenced. Over time ffmpeg has been changing its flags (for example) and we'll eventually not be able to guarantee compliance with significantly older versions.
