After merging #3646 I see a bunch of failures like this one with python 3.4.1:

UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xff in position 0: invalid start byte

This is on OSX 10.10 with python installed from homebrew. The tests passes with Python 2.7
I did not test with python 3 before the merge.
