I am in the middle of creating my dream home office and today’s project was creating a desk on a budget 

I already had two IKEA Alex units. They are perfect to flank either side of my desk.  The problem is, I love a long table top. The more surface space the better for me. When I looked at the prices of a 6’ x 24” table top, my wallet hurt! 

I’m on a time crunch to get moved back into my office, so I didn’t want something that would take me days to make. Even though I have all the tools and ability to cut and create a desktop, I decided to use my favorite project panels. They come in all sizes. Are simple to use. They’re pre-edge banded and stain or paint ready.

It’s time to refinish the desk! I got it second-hand for only $100 which brings our total spent to $1,345! Still under our $1,500 budget! Here’s what I did to refinish it:

1. Sand existing finish with 60grit sandpaper using an orbital sander.
2. Repeat the process with 220grit to create a smooth finish
3. OPTIONAL: Treat for bugs. I noticed a lot of small holes throughout the desk and worried about wood beetles so I treated it just in case. Treatment will depend on the bugs:
4. Stain! I used dark walnut, which I love and have used all throughout my house.
TIP: Don’t stain over wet or damp wood or you’ll be left with splotches!
