In May 1888 Van Gogh rented in Arles, the right-hand half of this building. He set up his studio downstairs, and a few months later the space above became his living quarters. He decorated what he called “my little yellow house’’ with newly painted works such as “Sunflowers”. It was his ambition to make the house into a refuge for artists. In the event, however, the only artist to turn up was Paul Gauguin. The two men shared the living space and the studio for the last two months of 1888…
