Jewels: Cameos through the Ages

Cameo is a method of carving a gem with a raised image (intaglio), usually in a contrasting color. This was achieved by carefully carving a piece of material where 2 contrasting colors met, sculpting the 1st color to leave a contrast background. Ancient cameos were made of gemstones or agates, ("hardstone cameos"). In cheaper work, shell & glass are common.
