By looking into the opening of The Last Guardian, we can dissect how the linear gameplay uses core Japanese values to build a companionship. This will be aided by commentary from the creator himself Fumito Ueda; lead game designer Masanobu Tanaka; studies relating to Japanese vs US culture within games, and emotional connections to video game characters. Being aware of these differences builds a strong foundation for a harmonious relationship between the game's narrative and mechanics. The outcome of this analysis is to spark a more critical approach to a symbiotic relationship between mechanics and narrative within games, something many role playing games made in the west could benefit greatly from.
