1. Let's āgoācheck out before I find something else to buy.
2. John is checking out his items at the cash register. (Correct, āchecking outā means scanning it yourself so the cash register would be a self-serve machine without a cashier)

the difference is 'out'
to pan out, to hold out, to carry out, to wait out
out = verb takes time
thus,
Is A the right answer? Lemme check it (I have an answer key). (near instantaneous action)
What's the situation? I'll check it out. (action takes time)
out can mean other things in other verb phrases though, such as location
I checked a book out.
Don't leave me out.

Check means to keep something functioning as it should. The executive branch checks the power of the judicial branch. Check can also mean to verify.
Check it out means come and look at this strange thing.

"Check it" is used when you want verify if something is correct (or working properly.) For ex., I'm not sure what time the show starts, I better check it on the ticket. Or, my car is making a strange noise I'm going to take it to my mechanic to check it.
"Check it out" is used to just look at or learn about something that you've heard about to become familiar with it. Allen told me that "Shameless" is a really funny tv show. I'm going to check it out for myself and see if I agree.

@soulfulsound you mean "check it out" is synonymous with "look at"
Was this answer helpful?
@truongvutute more or less, but not exactly. check it out could mean "look at" but it could also mean "listen to it" -- as in I love this song, check it out"... or, "taste it" -- as in "my cake didn't come out as well as last time, here check it out handing them a piece to eat.)

You might hear one guy say to another guy when a pretty girl walks past them "Hey, check it out." or "Check that out." or "Check it." This is not good English and it means look at her. It is used when the peron saying it thinks the girl is attractive. (Woman also do this if the see a cute guy) ...... If you found a book at the library, you could check it out and take it home to read. ......If you caught a fish to cook for dinner you could check it for bones before cooking it. ( it is implied once you find the bones you would also remove them)
