This paper describes the development of a style guide within the Historytelling Project to increase the consistency and therefore efficiency of the interface and to gain a higher software development efficiency. The implementation of the style guide is based on the preexisting CSS framework Bootstrap because of its high amount of predefined UI elements. The developed style guide consists of two components: the actual implementation of the style guide in the form of CSS customizations and the associated documentation. Both components are freely accessible and editable online. An adjusted interface was tested against a standard Bootstrap interface with 31 older adults aged 51 to 93 (M =...

However, many older adults using ICT encounter usability problems, particularly if the ICT was not designed with them in mind. If older adults are considered, their participation is often limited to the evaluation of a finished product. Our approach called “human-centered design for aging” (HCD+), considers older adults’ requirements and abilities throughout the development process, adapting established HCD-methods to accommodate the participation of older adults as experts for their own age group. This approach has been tested in a research project aiming to link older adults' life stories to historical events and appreciating their life experience. By conducting interviews, focus groups, workshops and evaluations with older adults, meta-guidelines were identified and integrated into the HCD+ approach. Following t...

If done right, information and communication technology offer great potential benefit for older users. Thus, we focus on a human-centered design approach for aging (HCD+). This Paper describes the development of an input component for the Historytelling project, a cooperative interactive platform for older adults to connect life stories with historic events and appreciate the potential for older adult’s life experience. We conducted a task analysis based on requirements for the Historytelling project and developed a high-fidelity prototype which was tested with eleven older adults. The prototype was valued highly overall but still had minor usability issues. Thus, we could show that a rather complex task such as telling a life story with various multimedia objects can be executed by older adults if they are integrated into the design process from early on.

In this phase, patients experience difficulties to communicate their basic needs or to meaningfully contact staff and relatives. This means psychological distress for all affected persons - patients themselves, medical/nursing staff and relatives. One major goal of project ACTIVATE is developing and evaluating the innovative, ball-shaped input device BIRDY. It integrates recent technology in terms of sensors, actors, energy supply and wireless communication. Ventilated patients should use BIRDY to interact with the ACTIVATE system that is intended to support communication, provide relevant information and control smart appliances in the room. This quasi-experimental study is part of a larger requirements analysis and aims to show which physical characteristics of BIRDY are relevant for potential users and which values are preferred. In the study, subjects evaluat...

For the development of the platform we focus on a human centered design approach for aging (HCD+). This article especially describes the interview study with potential users conducted at the beginning of the development process to analyze user requirements and context.

This becomes particularly apparent for older people’s use of public access systems like ticket vending machines (TVM), which should be „walk-up and use systems“ but often pose challenging problems for them. Are they too old to use IT? Based on the notion that usability is not a product characteristic, but rather an interaction characteristic of product and user, this thesis aims to (a) improve the usability of a ticket vending machine (TVM) following two different approaches (teach or design) and to compare the resulting three TVM designs (original, video, wizard) regarding the usability criteria effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction, and to (b) estimate the impact of age and age-correlated user characteristics on the successful use of these functionally equivalent TVM designs with a special focus on computer literacy. In a two (age group: young, o...

The original version (CLS-ST) was developed as a paper & pencil questionnaire and has been used in a variety of studies including older participants. The second version (CLA-IA) allows for the assessment of procedural knowledge in online work samples. The third version (CLS+) adds more difficult items to extend the measurement range to more proficient users. For the fourth version (CLS adaptive), still more items were added and those items that fit the Rasch model were selected for the item bank used in the adaptive version of the CLS, which reduces testing time to under five minutes while maintaining high reliability. Practitioner Summary: The paper describes the development of the compu...

It focuses on the evaluation (N=10 people aged 57 to 70 years) of age appropriate feedback within a high-fidelity prototype created in the human centered design process.

But recalling life stories on the spot is not easy. This paper addresses potential stimulus material in the context of HistoryTelling, an interactive, social platform for older adults on which they can record and pass on life stories and historical events to younger generations. In an HCD+ approach, we conducted workshops and interviews to get information about the occasion to pass on life stories and potential design recommendations on stimulus material. We found that both, the old and the young enjoyed the time spent together, appreciated the possibility to bond within the workshop and that pictures and questions were suitable as stimulus material for reminiscing, but that stories work best. We conclude with an outlook on our plans for further development of the HistoryTelling system.

For the development of the Historytelling system we follow a Human Centered Design for aging (HCD+) process, gathering requirements and designing first prototypes of this component. Workshop results show that the most important element of the feedback component is the personal, context sensitive acknowledgement of the stories which can be enriched with multimedia contents to provide more palpable appreciation.
