My plant diary

For some time, I wanted to record what happens to plants at certain times of year-observations & experiments under certain conditions. I wondered when do specific plants bloom, for how long, how to propagate specific plants, hydroponic experiments, etc. Many times no straightforward answer or get contradicting answers. It also changes from region to region. That’s why I decided to start this diary. Feel free to add comments, if you already have any experience with the plant of the day.

Day 216: Chrysanthemum in bloom
Finally, my chrysanthemum bloomed. I transplanted in the front yard some time ago. I was not really hopeful after the last week’s snow This week was comparatively warmer and here it is. I am not sure if it will survive the winter, if it is a hardy sort or if it will continue blooming, just enjoying the blooms. (🌤️ 1-10°C)

Day 213: Schefflera on lava rock
This is my Schefflera (umbrella plant) on lava rock. It needs pruning. I already pruned it a couplemof times and planted the cuttings in soil. The ones in soil seem to be doing better but I am challenging myself to keep this one alive. Actually it is not that difficult. Make sure that there is always some water at the bottom and once ina while give a few drops of fertilizer.
I was thinking thinking this was an Amaryllis and found out that it was a Hippeastrum. They are from the same family. I guess this causes the confusion. Anyway, this photo was from a bouquet from mid November last year.

Common heather (Heather, Ling) can have sorts blooming in winter or summer. They are small evergreen shrubs. That’s one of the reasons that I love them. They are sometimes potted in combination with other plants, not sure if they last long indoors.

As it is becoming colder and colder outside, it started to become more difficult to take photos of outdoor flowers. There are still some blooming and the photos will follow in the rest of the week from outside. This made me to turn to the indoor plants to share their photos. This phalaenopsis orchid has beautiful coral pink tones.

Yesterday I shared the red Anthurium bloom and today Anthurium with white bloom. Even when the heart shaped flowers fade, I am happy to have an Anthurium plant throughout the year because of its beautiful foliage.

It had a couple of new leaves recently. It has a beautiful foliage as well. Trying to keep ot happy… Not very difficult to care, I water it whenever the peace lily next to it needs watering. You can’t miss when peace lillies are thirsty. 🤣

Coleus plants at the garden have become almost as big as a small bush and now started to die. China Rose lost almost all leaves while Kong Red is still surviving. I am afraid not for long. Photos were taken at the beginning of October and they survived till the first days of November. Happy that I took some cuttings at that time, which seem fine indoors. I observed that if you take cuttings from plants with big leaves, they grow faster. I will share the photos of the potted cuttings soon. (🌧️☁️ 11-6°C)

Day 205: Laurustinus with white flowers
Laurustinus with tiny beautiful flowers is a huge evergreen shrub. It still has plenty of flowers in these first weeks of November. If you look for a large plant, it might be a good choice.
This dark violet aster has one of the prettiest colors for a flower. Great for combining with other plants in a container or in flower pots. It can also bring color to your flower beds or gardens with its small but lush flowers. Continues blooming in late fall. Plus it is a petennial.
