The origin of the pear salad traces back to "The American Salad Book," written in 1899 which lists a salad made by placing a pear on a bed of lettuce with a mayonnaise dressing. The ingredients are lettuce, canned pears, mayonnaise (preferably Dukes), and Cheddar cheese. Arrange lettuce on the dish. Drain canned pear halves, and place open-face-up on top of lettuce. Spoon a dollop of mayonnaise into each canned pear half, and sprinkle with Cheddar cheese.
