Giorgio Morandi, Name Paintings, Still Life Artists, Italian Painters, Still Life Art, Artist Gallery, Italian Artist, Abstract Expressionist, Still Life Painting

A tightly arranged group of boxes and vases sit on a table top represented only by a single line. Giorgio Morandi experimented with light and shadow falling across simple, geometric forms to create an abstract pattern. This work is characteristic of the still-life subjects that Morandi produced obsessively for more than forty years in his apartment in Bologna, Italy. His is an art of calm restraint in contrast to the other more flamboyant developments of modern art.

Giorgio Morandi‘s spare still lifes usually feature only a few objects, many of which tend to be in shades of beige or off-white, and prefigure the work of the Minimalists and Light and Space artists, who would look to him in the 1960s and ’70s for inspiration. With this painting I am experimenting with using the technique of the 20th century Italian painter Giorgio Morandi whom painted mainly bottles, jars and bowls & similar related objects, such as those I have painted. He is also known for using a limited colour palette and the colours are also desaturated as well. Hence the objects and colours in my painting. Bottles. Giorgio Morandi (1890 – 1964) was an Italian painter and printmaker who specialized in still life. His paintings are noted for their tonal subtlety in depicting apparently simple subjects, which were limited mainly to vases, bottles, bowls, flowers and landscapes. Giorgio Morandi is one of my favourite still-life artists. I love the pared down simplicity of some of his paintings, and the way his work always starts with the intense observation of a carefully arranged selection of objects. In order to get down to the description of the object's essential form, Morandi used to paint his bottles and pots in a solid colour. This means that the artist is not distracted by labels, and won't get way-laid by the fiddly, transparent effects of glass. I painted…

Giorgio Morandi Still Life 1956 oil on canvas Yale University Art Gallery Painting Sometimes you feel like painting, but you don’t know exactly what. Then, just when you least expect it, the idea comes to you from somewhere. It’s an idea that comes in colours, and so you set about painting. Almost immediately, problems start arising and you stop. And then another idea occurs to you that seems even more important than the previous one, and so you carry on, with the same passion as always…
