Located just outside the Pittsburgh city limits, is the Carrie Blast Furnace which once was part of the Homestead Steel Works. The two furnaces that make up the site were built in 1907 by Carnegie Steel and ran almost continuously until 1978 and so the end of the steel empire in Pittsburgh. The U.S. Steel's Homestead Works, was a sprawling 400-acre complex that spanned both sides of the Monogahela River. The furnaces were designated as a national historic landmark in 2006.
