8. This is an example of a segmente or an embroidered patch apliqued to a garment worn during the Byzantine period. This segmente was found on the silk robe created in 1181 under King William II in Palermo. The Hohenstaufen dynasty later acquired it in 1194 where it remained as part of the treasures of the Normandy Kings. Segmente, like the one shown, were done in a tapestry weave in rich colors.

2. 500–550 Byzantine mosaic of Ktisis, a symbol of donation and foundation, displays a style of headdress worn by woman during the Byzantine period. A coronet adorns her head that appears to be made of gold and pearls that were common materials used in jewelry during the time.
10. Circa 546 CE. In this Justinian and Retinue mosaic tile at Apse Entry we see a beautiful representation of a brooch that was worn during the Byzantine period. A brooch was used to keep the paludamentum, a semi-circular cape, in place and was always pinned on the right shoulder to allow ease of movement.
18. This 6th century mosaic of Theodora's retinue of Ladies in tunics show the way in which fabric began to change in fashion as Western trade began. It is believed that Theodora, the empress of the Roman empire and the wife of Emperor Justinian I, may have encouraged her husband to import silk worms to start a byzantine silk industry. This mosaic shows the garments draping in a more stiff fashion and has more folds which had evolved from the draping styles of the past Roman empire.

14. 7th Century. This art displays a wonderful example of a tablion, decorative patches placed on paladementums, on St Demetrios. This particular tablion represents the senatorial class that is displayed across his chest. This mosaic is named St Demetrios with children. It is part of a rare collection of mosaics from the Byzantine period that survived the iconoclast demise.
16. The Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos (r. 1143-1180). The successfully balanced both domestic opinion and made traditional Byzantine policy palatable to Western Crusaders. Become overlord of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, competed with Frederick Barbarossa for the honor of being the true "Emperor of the Romans," made a vassal of the Turks, and almost achieved church union. Quite a busy guy.
