Charles Eames Leather “Sofa Compact,” for Herman Miller 1954
These sculptures created by Ray Eames serve no purpose other than visual beauty. These objects can be categorized as art. Ray Eames was known as the more artistic of the two, and Charles as the designer. I do think there is a justified difference between art and design, not because one is inferior, but because they do serve different purposes: creating something for the sake of viewing versus creating something for the sake of practical use that happens to also be lovely.
