Professor Leaper qualified from the University of Leeds Medical School in 1970 MB ChB (with honours) and trained in general surgery in Leeds, Scarborough, King’s College and Westminster Hospitals in London with research periods as a Cancer Research Campaign Fellow and Medical Research Council Fellow. He passed the Glasgow Primary FRCS with distinction in 1972 and has the Fellowship in Surgery of the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh (1974), England (1975) and Glasgow (ad eundem 1999) with certification of completion of surgical training with the RCS England (1980); by thesis he was awarded the MD (1979; the relationship of prostaglandins to tumour growth) and ChM (1982; technical factors in surgical wound healing) from the University of Leeds Medical School; the Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons (1998); and Fellowship of the Linnaean Society of London (2010). He was Senior Lecturer in Surgery/Consultant surgeon at the University of Bristol (1981-1995), Professor of Surgery at the University of Hong Kong (1988-1990) and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (1995-2004), now Emeritus Professor, with Visiting Professor Status at Imperial College, London. He has been appointed as Professor of Clinical Sciences at the University of Huddersfield, (2013 onwards; now Emeritus), from which he has been awarded a DSc by publication (2015; the adverse effect of infection and poor perfusion on wound healing: experimental and clinical studies), and jointly founded the Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention in 2014. His surgical expertise was developed in colorectal and breast cancer, emergency surgery and critical care, oncology and development of day case surgery (Day Case Champion ,North Durham and Tees Strategic Health Authority, 2002-2004), with honorary consultant surgeon appointments at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Southmead Hospital, Bristol and North Tees University Hospital.
Professor Leaper’s research interests include surgical site infection, sepsis and critical care, wound healing, breast and colorectal cancer, computer-aided diagnosis, and surgical education and surgical training. He has been an editor/reviewer for many journals for 40 years and continues to present research abstracts and posters to several societies. He is a founder member and past president of the Surgical Infection Society of Europe and the European Wound Management Association; and a Hunterian Professor (1981) and a Zachary Cope lecturer (1999) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has published over 10 books, 50 chapters and 500 original research, review papers, posters and abstracts (over 230 publications on PubMed), many of which have won prizes. More than 30 research nurses and doctors have passed through his departments; most with successful Masters or Doctorate degrees. He was awarded a Danish Surgeons 100th anniversary medal based on research and has been awarded several eponymous lectures. He is still active in research with current projects in the field of wound healing, health care associated and surgical site infections, and infection prevention/control. In addition to continued activity with many societies, he is an advisor and recognised teacher to several national and international, academic and Industry-linked projects.
Professor Leaper is a past member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, as well as the lamented Primary FRCS examination, and has subsequently examined for the Intercollegiate Fellowship and as an external examiner for many other professional and University undergraduate and postgraduate examinations (senior examiner at Imperial College, London for MBBS 2007, 2010). He was an instigator and trainer on the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient course (CCrISP). He is a past programme director of surgical training (Northern Deanery) and served on the Specialist Advisory Board in general surgery. He was Chair of the NICE guideline development group on SSI (published 2008 with an update in 2013), was a member of the Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection advisory committee (2007-2013).
