Salmon, Roman Colonization under the Republic (London, 1969). Their claim is based mainly on Tacitus' description of the colony at Camulodunum, Britain (Tacitus, Ann. 12.32). Isaac disagreed with this interpretation and argued that colonies did not serve any strategic defensive or administrative role in the empire but were much the same as ordinary civilian settlements: Isaac, The Limits of Empire, 311-32.

As such they are a valuable source of information about daily life during this period. This paper examines the connection and correlation between Talmudic texts, mainly of legal nature, and the archaeological record of the Southern Levant regarding the features and uses of baking ovens. While this is a relatively narrow and specific topic, it may provide valuable insight into daily life in Roman era Israel\Palestine and also an indication of the level of correlation between these two media through which we may learn about Roman era Israel. The results of this study show correlation between archaeology and Talmud in many aspects. However, in some aspects the archaeological record does not match the Talmudic law and thus a new interpretation that takes into account both text and artifact is required. In other aspects Talmudic texts may provide an interpretation to an unclear archaeological find or context. The examples given here demonstrate the potential for mutual enrichment of the research of each discipline by the other. Furthermore, this study of baking ovens is one of a spare few. Household implements such as ovens have not been intensely studied. An archaeological study of household items such as ovens may provide insight to daily life especially when integrated with the Talmudic texts.
