Damping causes energy dissipation in buildings while they are under earthquake or wind excitation... more Damping causes energy dissipation in buildings while they are under earthquake or wind excitations and resulting decrement in structural responses. There are several approaches to increase the building’s damping among them using Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). TMD is a device consisting of a (or a few) mass(s), spring(s), and damper(s) that is attached to a structure in the specific points in order to reduce the dynamic response of the structure. The purpose of using TMD is to produce an artificial force originated from the mass of TMD in order to counteract the structural vibration at which the TMD is installed. TMD is most effective for periodic excitations and wind loads. In this book, the dynamic formulations and applications of TMD in structures are investigated.

Strengthening of steel structures is necessary to overcome durability problems, to accommodate sh... more Strengthening of steel structures is necessary to overcome durability problems, to accommodate shortcoming in design and construction process or to increase load bearing capacity. Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) is currently one of the most widely used materials for strengthening steel structures. Normally, CFRP strips for flexural strengthening are installed to bottom flange while CFRP strips for shear strengthening of steel beams are applied to web. In this book, the effective methods for shear strengthening were investigated. Comprehensive experimental and numerical studies were conducted to address these issues. In general, it can be concluded that full-covering of the web shear zone with both sides web strengthening gave the best improvement in the load bearing capacity of the strengthened beams. This book includes following chapters: Chapter One: Introduction, Chapter Two: Literature Review, Chapter Three: Experimental Programme, Chapter Four: Developments of Numerical Models, Chapter Five: Results and Discussions, and Chapter Six: Conclusions.

Structural Behaviours of Aluminum Panel: A Novel Type of Building Damper

n this book, an innovative type of yielding damper is introduced having aluminum panels and stiff... more n this book, an innovative type of yielding damper is introduced having aluminum panels and stiffened using steel stiffeners. Dampers are the first elements in the structures which respond to seismic forces, prevent from destructive damage to other main elements of structure and reduce the costs related to structural improvement. A comprehensive numerical study is employed in this study. The aluminum panel, its peripheral steel frame, and steel stiffeners are modeled in ABAQUS software. Each of the square and rectangular frames is investigated using six different stiffeners. The panels are considered to be under harmonic load; energy absorption is calculated for every cycle and the results of square and rectangular panels are compared with each other. The best rectangular panel is the panel with two horizontal and vertical stiffeners (RP-3), and the best square panel is the panel with two horizontal and vertical stiffeners (SP-3). Rectangular panels show better behavior than square panels for energy absorbing. Even in some cases, rectangular panels without stiffeners can be used instead of square panels with stiffeners.

Aluminum Panel Yielding Dampers: An Energy Dissipation Device for Earthquake Resistant Buildings

In this book, aluminum panel is introduced as a novel structural yielding damper. Aluminum is a m... more In this book, aluminum panel is introduced as a novel structural yielding damper. Aluminum is a material benefiting from advantages such as low yielding stress (LYS), low weight and a wide range of plastic behavior and suitable to be used as a yielding damper material. A comprehensive numerical study using ABAQUS software was done to indicate how aluminum panels behaved as yielding dampers. Six states of aluminum panels were used which included five types with different stiffener arrangements and one type without stiffeners. Results were evaluated in terms of curves of hysteresis and energy absorption and yield index. It was concluded that the number of stiffeners and their arrangement were among the factors affecting evaluation of aluminum panels. Consequently, the best aluminum panel was the one with vertical as well as horizontal stiffeners. Also, the best aluminum yielding damper (AYD) in terms of economy and energy absorption was AYD-3 which included three parallel aluminum plates. This book includes four following chapters: Chapter One: Introduction, Chapter Two: Materials and Methods, Chapter Three: Results and Discussions, and Chapter Four: Conclusions.

The use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) material for strengthening of steel structures ... more The use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) material for strengthening of steel structures has gained significant interests recently. There are various methods used for the strengthening of steel structures. Amongst them are the application of additional steel parts, external pre-stressing of parts, and reducing or bridging the gap between the supports. These methods require considerable time and cost. In contrast, CFRP is high in strength, light in weight, strong resistance to corrosion, and suitable for upgrading of steel structures. CFRP flexural strengthened steel beams have suffered various failures such as debonding, delamination, and splitting. Understanding of these CFRP failure modes is useful to find solutions for preventing or retarding them. This book has presented the observed CFRP failure modes in the flexural strengthening of several steel I-beams which were numerically modelled and experimentally tested.

Th... more This study introduces U-shape metallic yielding damper (UMYD) as an energy dissipation system. This damper may be used as a replaceable and cost-effective tool and fuse in structural frames to improve lateral ductility, energy absorption and damping of structural systems under earthquakes. A series of static cyclic tests were conducted in order to examine the performance of UMYD and the response of force-displacement, lateral strength, elastic stiffness and energy absorption were achieved. Finite element numerical studies were conducted through changing damper geometrical parameters. Mathematical model was presented to estimate elastic stiffness of damper and was compared with numerical specimen results, which acceptable conformity. Finite elements models indicated that UMYD abilities energy absorbability in large displacements without loss of strength and stiffness, which may be a proper complementary system for lateral load-bearing systems. The behaviour of two 4-and 8-storey steel frames with moment resisting frame system was analysed under four different earthquakes under two states of with and without damper. The seismic performance of frames was analysed with respect to floors inter-storey drift, frame base shear and floors shear. The non-linear time historey analysis results demonstrated that 8-storey frame without UMYD failed to maintain the structure performance level within life-safety level, whilst under all states using damper, performance level remained within such level and a decrease in floors shear and inter-storey drift was observed.

The present study is aimed to evaluate the effects of the axial loading, axial displacement, stiffness and deficiency location on the length of the deficient steel SHS columns have been evaluated based on a detailed parametric study. Three specimens were tested to failure under axial compression in the lab and simulated using the Finite Element (FE) numerical approach and a total of 100 samples were analyzed by ABAQUS using the MATLAB software to predict the suitable limit state functions and determine the best R2 value through such soft computing techniques as the Artificial Neural Networks, Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, Response Surface Method, and Gene Expression Programming. Shear strengthening of steel I-beams by using CFRP strips

Normally, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips have been used for flexural strengthening... more Normally, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips have been used for flexural strengthening of steel beams, but in this research, application of CFRP strips as shear reinforcements was innovated. In this novel method, investigation on the requirement of applying CFRP on one or both sides of the web, and using different values of CFRP area on the web were the two main objectives. In this research, five specimens were selected. The first specimen (B1) was not strengthened. The second and third beams (B2 and B3) were upgraded on both sides of web with the CFRP ratios of 0.72 and 0.48, respectively. The fourth and fifth specimens (B4 and B5) were strengthened on one side of web with the CFRP ratios of 0.72 and 0.48, respectively. Both numerical simulation and experimental test were used in this research. The results show that by using CFRP strips on web, could appropriately increased the load bearing capacity up to 51%. Also, the CFRP ratios of 0.72 and 0.48 for both sides of web have produced the same load capacity. Using less CFRP in the shear zone with the same load capacity of the steel I-beams was one of the significant achievements of this research.

This paper presents the findings of experimental and numerical investigations on failure analysis... more This paper presents the findings of experimental and numerical investigations on failure analysis and structural behavior of notched steel I-beams reinforced by bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) plates under static load. To find solutions for preventing or delaying the failures, understanding the CFRP failure modes is beneficial. One non-strengthened control beam and four specimens with different deficiencies (one side and two sides) on flexural flanges in both experimental test and simulation were studied. Two additional notched beams were investigated just numerically. In the experimental test, four-point bending method with static gradual loading was employed. To simulate the specimens, ABAQUS software in full three dimensional (3D) case and non-linear analysis method was applied. The results show that the CFRP failure modes in strengthening of deficient steel I-beams include end-debonding, below point load debonding, splitting and delamination. Strengthening schedule is important to the occurrences and sequences of CFRP failure modes. Additionally, application of CFRP plates in the deficiency region prevents crack propagation and brittle failure.

In this paper, the performance of square hollow section (SHS) steel columns with defect at differ... more In this paper, the performance of square hollow section (SHS) steel columns with defect at different temperatures is investigated. Accordingly, the columns are constructed with different locations of the defect in 6 modes. The specimens are also exposed to five temperatures of 20 °C (ambient temperature), 100 °C, 250 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C. Afterward, the columns are subjected to axial loading, and force–displacement curves of each column are presented. Then, to improve the behavior of the damaged columns by the two mentioned factors, the specimens of defective columns at two temperatures of 20 °C and 700 °C, are retrofitted using steel plates. The results of the specimens show that with increasing temperature, the bearing capacity of the columns decreases, which is about 15% for defectless columns at 700 °C and up to 35% depending on the type of defect for defective specimens. Also, comparison of different defects indicates that the maximum decrease in bearing capacity of column specimens with horizontal defect and vertical defects is related to the defect located at the middle of the column at 20 °C and at the bottom of the column at 700 °C, respectively. Finally, by retrofitting the defects of the columns with steel plates, the bearing capacity of the columns at 700 °C increases about 13%.
