Kilimanjaro is one of the 6 regions in Tanzania that has suffered from acute food shortages. Childreach Tanzania has been running the School Farming Project to combat hunger among school children since 2010. In collaboration with the World Food Programme, Childreach Tanzania has been working in the Simanjiro District, Kilimanjaro. The project aims to provide the schools with assistance and guidance on sustainable farming, helping them to harvest vegetables which provide children with hands on experience and access to food at school and home. We provided schools with seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, and taught children farming techniques-how to irrigate, storage of vegetables and the nutritional importance of vegetables for children.Since this project, children have been eating vegetables two to three times a week in their lunches, which in turn has increased attendance. To support this project please visit www.childreach.org.uk/schoolfarming
This project has seen, communities getting involved by building their skills set on farming techniques to plant at home, thus ensuring the project's sustainability and general health and nutrition in the district. We are looking for ways to expand this project so that children get access to valuable education while being healthy and fed. To support this project please visit www.childreach.org.uk/schoolfarming
Childreach Update
School farming and gardening programme has benefited 39 schools in Moshi rural and Simanjiro districts to date. Rather than provide the food ourselves in a basic feeding programme, we wanted to empower local schools and communities to do this themselves, thereby ensuring the project’s sustainability, building the capacity and skills of all involved. To support this project please visit - www.childreach.org.uk/schoolfarming
The impact of the projects- The impact so far: The project has improved school attendance, bringing the average across schools from 70% to 92%. The average percentage of underweight children in every school was 20% before we began this project. It is now an incredible 7%. Since 2011 to date we have benefited 39 schools which means 17,099 children have been ensured with one hot meal a day for a year.
